History, Affiliations & Governance

Organization & Administration

Chartered in 1874 as the First Baptist Church of Hyde Park (later, Hyde Park Baptist Church) in the Northern Baptist Convention (later the American Baptist Churches, USA), HPUC affiliated with the United Church of Christ in 1963 in inclusion of non-Baptist attendees. The American Baptist Churches USA and the United Church of Christ affirm the Free Church Tradition in which local churches are autonomous in governance and form voluntary associations with their denominations. Consequently, as with all churches in the ABCUSA and the UCC, HPUC owns and maintains its own building, raises its own funds, calls its own pastors, and determines its own policies and practice.
