Summer Worship Series
June 22 - August 24, 2008
Each summer Hyde Park Union Church devotes ten to twelve weeks to a particular theme in worship, allowing for more in-depth exploration of a topic than the lectionary-based preaching practiced throughout the rest of the year. The summer order of worship itself is shaped by each summer’s theme, granting the church low-threshold opportunities to experiment with new worship forms. In past years, foci have included the twelve minor prophets, the Sermon on the Mount, the Psalms, and the Gospel of John. The theme for 2008, the Ten Sayings, was carefully chosen to examine the ten commandments of the Mosaic Code in a fresh light, that we might familiarize ourselves more deeply not only with the unyielding moral imperative of the commandments but with their ethical and theological complexity.
Our guest preachers in this Series represent an array of professional disciplines and concerns which preclude glib interpretations of the commandments and thus testify to their troubling and enduring importance as grounding for our ethical principals as Christians and as citizens of the world.
