A Message about our Capital Fund
This spring, the congregation committed to raising $500,000 to complete repairs to the fifth-level tower room in 2024, sealing it against further damage from the elements. To date, we have received just over half of our fundraising goal, with a total of 64% of the money pledged. God is good!
We have also been in communication with Berglund Construction and Ed Torrez, the architect who completed a conditions assessment of the tower room, and are preparing for construction to begin in late summer/early fall. With a couple months to go, we need a final push to raise an additional $180,000 to help us reach our goal.
While it's not visibly front and center, the deterioration of the tower room has severely hampered our ability to use and space share much of our building, and it has been a drain on staff and lay leadership time and energy. Moving toward repair and Chicago landmark designation was a necessary and decisive step of faith, in our congregation, our space, and our broader mission in the community. Through ongoing discussions that will follow, we hope to bring our property's future into clearer focus.
The path ahead will take prayer, time, special skills, more decisions, and financial generosity, and we need all of us! And as we approach Hyde Park Union Church's 150th anniversary in September, we are eager to renew, reenergize, and reimagine the space we occupy, both literally and spiritually. To make a tax-deductible donation to our building repair fund, you can give online or write a check (encouraged to avoid online banking fees). To transfer stocks (tax free!), please reach out to [email protected]. Please be sure to indicate that the donation is meant for the building repair fund.
