Welcome to Rev. Zachary Mills

Rev. Zachary Mills is a poet, author, journalist, and first-generation Baptist minister. A native of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Mills earned his B.A. from Western Kentucky University in Print Journalism, and his Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt, where he received the Saint James Academy Award for excellence in preaching. He has had sermons published in two national journals, The African American Pulpit and the Journal of Religion and Abuse.

Rev. Mills has also worked as a journalist at The Tennessean and The Gallatin News Examiner newspapers, and has authored two books: The Wellspring of Life, a book about the power of the voice; and Ghetto of Eden: the Poetic Battle between Humanity and Hip Hop, a book of poetry critiquing the effects of popular music on society.

 

 

This Week at Hyde Park Union Church

Tuesday Evening Bible Study meets weekly at 7 p.m.  This group is an opportunity for fellowship, learning and spiritual growth—everyone is welcome to join. Please call the Church Office for more details.

There will be no Body Prayer this Saturday, because of the holiday.

“Inequality and the Pursuit of Happiness”  Rev. Dr. Franklin I. Gamwell, Professor of Religious Ethics at the University of Chicago Divinity School, will give the second lecture of this year’s summer speaker series, this Sunday, July 5.  During coffee hour there will be a discussion with Rev. Gamwell. Children may leave the service during the Opening Hymn, to watch the second half of An American Tail, to discuss economy-related themes in the movies, and to recreate characters from the movie in clay. There will be refreshments provided for both adults and children.

This year's Summer Series, titled "It's Not Just the Money: Christian Perspectives on the Economy," will feature five public lectures from experts in theology, history, ethics, and social welfare, designed to encourage conversation around some of the deepest underlying assumptions of our economic life and the values we express through it. There will be time for conversation with the experts and with each other, over refreshments, following each service.

Children’s Summer Series Program  As a parallel to the adult education summer series, children are invited to go to the Parlor after the Children’s Sermon on Sundays when there is a guest speaker.  We will watch animated films, discuss economy-related themes, and recreate characters from the film in clay.  Refreshments will be provided.  An American Tail will be shown in halves, on June 28 and July 5; The Grasshopper and the Ants will be shown on July 19; and Ratatouille will be shown in halves, on August 9 and 16.
