“Every Healthy Community Has a Safety Net.”
Hyde Park Union Church has actively supported the Hyde Park & Kenwood Hunger Programs since their beginning in 1981. In 2007, our church took over the financial management of the Hunger Programs, under the direction of the Hunger Programs’ board. In this role, we work with other groups and faith communities to collect food, to recruit volunteers, and to raise funds for this important work. The Hyde Park & Kenwood Hunger Programs are supported by people who live in the community.
In 2000, the Food Pantry moved to our church. It is open every Saturday throughout the year from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Several of our members volunteer and assist each week with the unloading of deliveries from the Greater Chicago Food Depository. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the Church Office, and we’ll put you in touch with the Jan Deckenbach, the volunteer coordinator.
The Soup Kitchen is coordinated by Rev. Leroy Sanders at his church, Kenwood United Church of Christ, 4608 S. Greenwood Ave. It serves a hot meal on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays from Noon to 1 p.m. Once a month, on Missions and Social Concerns Sundays, our church prepares chili after Sunday Worship for 200 to be served the following day at the Open Kitchen.
